Hip Dysplasia and Pediatric Hip Surgeon in Kandivali. In babies and young children, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition in which the “ball and socket” joint of the hip does not form properly.
Hip dysplasia, or congenital dislocation of the hip, is another name for it.
The hip joint connects the femur (thigh bone) to the pelvis. The femur’s top (femoral head) is rounded and sits inside the cup-shaped hip socket.
The hip socket is too shallow in DDH, and the femoral head is not held tightly in place, resulting in a loose hip joint. The femur can come out of the socket in severe cases (dislocate).
Within 72 hours of birth, your baby’s hips will be checked as part of the newborn physical screening examination.
The exam entails gently moving your baby’s hip joints to see if any problems exist. It shouldn’t bother them in any way. If a doctor, midwife, or nurse thinks your baby’s hip is unstable, they should have an ultrasound scan between 4 and 6 weeks old.
